If you’re looking for careers for loners, you probably are one. I was always looking for jobs I could do without the stress and discomfort of having a boss. Maybe it’s me personally who’s got a problem with having a boss. Not everyone has a problem with it. For me, it has always been a burden too hard to bear. Perhaps being an introvert made it impossible for me to operate in a normal work environment.
I wanted a career I could excel at but which wouldn’t bring up my inner conflicts. In hindsight, it may have been easier to deal with them first. Anyhow, I perhaps wasn’t aware enough to know it, and went on a mission for my perfect job. This involved attempting several careers for loners, en-route.
Careers For Loners
Working as a lifeguard was a great job for a loner. I was alone all day and had very little interaction with the boss. This was a pretty good thing because I really didn’t like the boss! I always found it near impossible to put on a ‘happy face’ when confronted with someone I didn’t like. This was my main problem. I also worked as a take-away driver for a quite some time.
Again, this allowed me to work on my own for most of the night. There were two bosses and one of them I got on with. The other was a shouter and a little bossy which didn’t go down very well with me. I shut my pain away though and largely dealt with it by internalising my anger! Not a fun idea! Such is the life of an introvert!
This is perhaps why I searched for careers for loners. I hated being shouted at and told what to do. Unless I liked someone, it pained me to work for them! I also had jobs working on building sites, driving HGV’s and chauffeur driving for a TV show. I did meet and greet driving at an airport and data input too.
All these jobs taught me something valuable – I wanted to work for myself! HGV driving sounded like the perfect loner job. However, like many jobs there’s always more to the role than you imagine. despite mostly driving alone I also worked with a drivers mate on some occasions.
The wistful notion of travelling across country while being paid didn’t match up to the reality.
Careers For Introverts – Television
I learned about the British Stunt Register when I was in my 20’s and thought it would be a great career option. I was passionate about the martial arts and didn’t see teaching as a viable career option back then. Stunt work seemed like a suitable alternative and sounded like it fit the category of careers for loners too!
I learned 6 skills to instructor level to join the stunt register and get work as a stunt performer. However, I was mostly out of work and so I was still working for other people. I took a job as a taxi driver and juggled that with the occasional stunt jobs.
I struggled financially for years while trying to find work and driving a taxi. Eventually I turned to the internet as a means to earn an income. I had kept up my interest in the martial arts however and eventually opened a kung fu school. This definitely is a good career for a loner, although it took a long time to get to a level of being able to teach.
Careers For Loners – A Career Online
Not knowing where your next job is coming from is incredibly stressful. Over time it can wear you down. I looked to the internet as a means to make an income during the many quiet times when I was out of work. It seemed like the perfect job at the time, not because it was a career for loners but simply because it offered a means to earn in a flexible way.
Initially I bought and sold from charity shops and car boot sales. I used eBay to sell items I picked up cheap. I eventually moved on to an eBay system which is share in my article how to start a profitable ebay business.
It was a clever way of finding cheap items and then selling them on for a higher price. However, it wasn’t scalable or automated and I found myself drowning in second hand items and constantly working to make ends meet. I looked for something else and eventually found a business model called affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing lets anyone make a profit by selling other people’s products over the internet.
By recommending products and linking to them from websites, anyone can earn a full time living. They don’t need to personally fulfil any orders or even speak to any customers. It seemed like the perfect loner career for me! A life behind a computer screen with not a boss in sight!
Affiliate Marketing – The Perfect Loner Career
Introverts don’t always appear to be introverts. However, if you like your own space and avoid people, you just might be an introvert. I was led to affiliate marketing by a quest to earn from the internet. I had tried several careers before I found it. To me affiliate marketing is a great business model. You can work whenever you want from wherever you want to be. As long as you have an internet connection and a laptop, you’re good to go!
Not only that but affiliate marketing is a business model which can be automated. When I bought an ebook from eBay in the early 2000’s, I thought it was something magical. I knew what a great business model selling digital products was. Simply because it was global and it could be automated. It wasn’t until several years later that it was working for me.
How To Get Started With Affiliate Marketing
Affiliate marketing is also something anyone can learn. If you’re hard working and open minded, you might be a good fit for affiliate marketing. The two most exciting parts of affiliate marketing for me are:
- automation
- scalability
My eBay business worked and meant I could work from home with no boss. However, it was severely limited by the fact that I was in the loop. If I stopped working, my income would stop. Affiliate marketing lets anyone recommend products from around the internet and get paid for promoting them. They can set this up so that they continue getting paid even when they’re not working.
This is the automation part of affiliate marketing. If you can automate the sale of digital products online, you can set up a system to sell them through a digital medium (the internet) over and over again. With the right products and business model, anyone can learn this and build an income which can eventually replace their existing job or career. As careers for loners go, working online is probably one of the best.
The scalability part of an online business is another exciting concept. Selling other people’s products over the internet means you can automate sales through affiliate links and websites. The ability to scale up is available by using digital products and a global audience. With digital products you can sell to anyone globally and there is no postage costs or manufacturing costs involved (apart from their initial creation). This saving is then passed on to affiliate marketers who can make 40%+ commissions on other people’s digital products.
