Depending where you are you might need to pass a basic knowledge test but many taxi drivers now use sat nav to find where they’re going. Taxi drivers can work hours that suit day or night and it’s a good self employed idea for people who want to pick up and drop work as it suits.

HGV Driver – HGV drivers are self employed in many cases. You do of course need an HGV licence but once you have got it you can work anywhere. Working for an agency can give you the necessary work experience you need to secure more long term employment. The higher wages are paid to HGV drivers who go on to do articulated heavy goods vehicles and who drive hazardous goods.

Actor – Actors are basically self employed and get their work through agents. If you fancy doing acting work you will need to go to acting school and expect to work many other jobs while you build up your portfolio of work. Extras/Background Artist – TV extras work is on a self employed basis. Anyone can join an extras agency and pick up work in local TV and or film productions. Working full time as an extra will require you to travel and extras don’t usually get travel expenses but are paid by the day. Most TV extras who I have met do it as a part time ‘extra income’, forgive the pun!

Unit Driver – Unit drivers work on a self employed basis and drive actors and crew members around. It’s long hours and there is plenty of sitting around. If you’re interested in TV work and like driving it might be for you!
