Autosuggestion – What Is Autosuggestion?

What is autosuggestion? Here’s what the Author of the classic “Think and Grow Rich”, Napoleon Hill has to say on autosuggestion:

“Autosuggestion is a term which applies to all self-administered stimuli which reach one’s mind through the five senses. It is the agency of communication between that part of the mind where conscious thought takes place, and that which serves as the seat of action for the subconscious mind”.

“Through the dominating thoughts which one permits to remain in the conscious mind, (whether these thoughts be negative or positive is immaterial), the principle of autosuggestion voluntarily reaches the subconscious mind and influences it with these thoughts.”

Autosuggestion – What Is Autosuggestion?

So autosuggestion then, is the constant and consistent stream of consciousness which impacts on our sub-conscious mind by either our deliberate or unconscious thought patterns. Hill goes to say:

“…the subconscious mind (resembles) a fertile garden spot, in which weeds will grow in abundance, if the seeds of more desirable crops are not sown therein. Autosuggestion is the agency of control through which an individual may voluntarily feed his subconscious mind on thoughts of a creative nature, or, by neglect, permit thoughts of a destructive nature to find their way into this rich garden of the mind.”

Autosuggestion is therefore self suggestion; the repetition of ‘your own’ ideas, concepts, ideals and beliefs which are allowed to manifest through your own thoughts, words and associations. This constant stream of inner dialogue, is your most powerful tool, if you can learn to address it and harness it.

Autosuggestion Techniques

Autosuggestion techniques include a variety of methods to both induce positive thoughts over negative ones and to become more aware of our thinking processes. Our thoughts tend to run on autopilot due to our circumstances, the people we associate with, our habits and our beliefs. By becoming more aware of our thinking and our speech, we can begin to see how we are creating our own reality through our own self-administered suggestion.

  1. Watch your self talk – Both what you tell yourself in your inner mind and what you say out loud have dramatic effects on your subconscious reality. By feeding your unconscious mind better thoughts, you can change your outer reality over time. Start by noticing how you speak to yourself and others on a daily basis. Don’t try and control anything at this point, just observe yourself.
  2. Notice negative suggestions – If you notice anything negative in your speech patterns, particularly negative self talk or self criticism, stop and repeat a contrary statement. If that’s too difficult initially, just notice your speech. Eventually you will want to fade out your negative self talk and replace it with positive self talk instead.
  3. Use repetition of positive phrases and self talk to build yourself up. If you’ve noticed a lot of negative self talk, you’ll see how much of a habit this has probably become. Changing this to a positive self-dialogue is a major key in autosuggestion. You’ve probably been doing this for years, so it may take some time and focus to alter it.
  4. Visualisation – Use visualisation to imagine your life as you would like it to be. Day dream about what you would like to happen. Imagine everything going perfectly for you. See also affirmations, mantras and positive intention, and money mantra to become rich.

Positive Autosuggestion

As you might notice when you start paying attention to your thoughts, you may have picked up some very negative suggestions about yourself. Imagine how this has been affecting your unconscious mind. This in turn will affect your self image and this is a major key to your life as a whole. By changing these negative suggestions with positive ones, you will start to make some far reaching and long lasting changes in your life.

Most people wouldn’t treat anyone as badly as they do themselves! A constant self beating is what we can be giving ourselves all day, if we don’t consciously choose some kinder thoughts and wiser words to feed ourselves. We have often picked these ideas and attitudes up from others who taught us how we should ‘feel’ about ourselves. We take these negative assumptions and beliefs into our lives with us and continually persecute ourselves for our own ‘shortcomings’ and self perceived ‘failings’. Positive autosuggestion can reverse this damaging, habitual, negative self talk and give us a more positive self image.

Whatever negative things you may have picked up which you tell yourself, start to notice them and soften them with some positive affirmations. Instead of self criticism, choose self love and support. Instead of self loathing choose instead to use encouraging, positive words. Imagine what you would say to a small chile if they were upset. Would you choose harsh criticising condemning language, or soft loving and encouraging words? Why would you treat yourself so badly?

Autosuggestion Affirmations

Counteract many of the negative autosuggestions which you have been “self administering” over your life. Use your negative affirmations to notice where you are in the most need. For example, if you criticise yourself for something, use an opposing view to help shift your perception.

Negative: I’m useless – Positive: I’m a good person who has value

Negative: I’m hopeless at that – Positive: I’m am open to learning new things, I’m good at..

More Autosuggestion Affirmations

I’m happy and grateful now that I have…

I choose things which are good for my mental health

Money comes easily and effortlessly

I am loved, wealthy and abundant

I only allow positive ideas into my mind

My affirmation for success always produce positive results

Autosuggestion Meditation

Meditation is a good way to become more conscious of what kinds of thoughts you are having. You can also use a mantra in your meditation. Repeat affirmations over and over during a quiet meditation. Tibetan Mala beads are a meditation tool. They have 108 beads and buddhists use them to repeat mantras while counting the beads.

The traditional mantra is Om Mani Padme Hum. Reciting a phrase over and over while concentrating on its meaning is a powerful way to use an autosuggestion meditation. If you choose something you want to change in your life and repeat it often, your autosuggestion will influence the unconscious mind and bring about change very quickly, if you do it in the right way.

For example, in this article on money mantra to become rich, Bob Proctor shares a powerful autosuggestion which he has used effectively to bring more money into his life:

“I’m so happy and grateful now, money comes to me, in increasing amounts through multiple sources on an ongoing basis”

Training Subconscious Mind Autosuggestion

Autosuggestion is the training of your unconscious mind. Your unconscious mind will deliver far greater results in your life, than you can achieve with conscious effort alone. If you want things to change in your life, you need to learn to use both your subconscious mind and your conscious mind together as a team.

Training your subconscious mind with autosuggestion will help you to do this. As Bob Proctor mentions in the video above, your paradigm controls much of what happens in your life. Your ‘paradigm’ is your belief system. Everything evolves around your beliefs because it’s how you see the world. Your self image is a big part of this too. By changing your self image and paradigm, you can ‘shift’ your model of the world and this can have a dramatic effect on your actions and results in life.

If you believe life is hard, it will be. Should life be a struggle, or should it be easy? Do you need to work harder for a better lifestyle, or smarter? Are you happy and do you deserve to be happy? Do you see yourself as a success, or a failure?

Your answers to these questions will in many ways explain your current life situation. Instead of consciously “trying” to make changes on the outside of life, by shifting some ideas on the ‘inside’ you can make far bigger changes, and make them much more easily. This can be done by training your unconscious mind through autosuggestion.

Power Of Autosuggestion

autosuggestion

Autosuggestion is responsible for what your life is already, whether you are aware of this or not. The power of autosuggestion to affect your unconscious mind and produce results in your life is huge. Most people attempt to create circumstances and situations in life, while simultaneously sabotaging themselves.

They do this by creating a discourse between their unconscious minds, (what they believe about themselves), and their conscious thoughts, (what they want to achieve). Unless they resolve this conflict in themselves, they are doomed to be a ‘slave’ to their unconscious mental thought processes, which is a main contributing factor to the results they are achieving, (or not achieving) in their lives.

To become the master of your life, you must attain control over the dominating thoughts which you allow to remain in your conscious thought patterns. Then use that control to direct your life in the way you want. This is the huge power of autosuggestion.

How To Practice Suggestion And Autosuggestion

You are already doing both of these by thinking, planning, visualising and meditating. All of these are strategies of thinking or control. If you learn how to practice suggestion and autosuggestion, you can become more conscious of your thoughts, emotions and desires. By focusing your efforts and aligning your biggest intensions with your inner dialogue, mantras and affirmations, you can make far greater leaps towards the life you really want.

However, there may be certain conflicts between what you want, and what you are prepared to get there. For example, you might want a better body, more money and greater fitness. But, you may also want to eat cake and sit on the sofa! You might want more money, but you also want to be happy in what you are doing.

This can present come conflicts, especially if your old beliefs are holding you where you are. Perhaps you believe you can’t earn more, while enjoying life i the same way? Or you believe you must become unhappy while working towards weight loss?

By learning to align your goals with your values and ideals, you can create more purpose and better outcomes together, while achieving your intentions and desires. This takes a little work, but it’s work worth doing. The work involves learning how to practice suggestion and autosuggestion so that your focus is on your highest purpose all the time. When your purpose is aligned with your values, everything become much simpler. You’re no longer fighting with yourself, caught between conflicting ideals and goals.

This is probably the most important work your can do on yourself because once you know what you want, getting it is much easier!

How To Use Autosuggestion

how to use autosuggestion

The ideas in this article explain how to use autosuggestion. The main strategy is to gain control of the thoughts you are having by first noticing them. Once you learn to notice your thoughts, you can consciously choose better thoughts which are more in alignment with who you are and what you want in life. Otherwise, it’s easy to drift in life and let others lead you to where they want you to be, and into what they want you to do!

There are a few ideas to gain more control of your thoughts and how to use autosuggestion:

  • Notice who you spend time with – They will ‘reflect’ your ideas, attitudes and beliefs (or you will reflect theirs) Birds of a feather flock together!
  • Watch your thoughts through meditation – Notice any self defeating or negative thoughts and take note
  • Pay attention to how you speak – Words are powerful
  • Use affirmations to change negative thoughts into positive ones
  • Visualisation can help you “speak” to your unconscious mind

How To More Purposefully Use Autosuggestion

autosuggestion

Use autosuggestion more purposefully by getting clear on your intentions. Most people don’t know exactly what they want. Their goals and desires are vague. That’s why they seldom achieve the things they really want from life. Even if they are purposeful in many ways, they can sabotage themselves with their conflicting intentions for themselves and their lives.

Stuart Lichtman’s How To Get Lot’s Of Money For Anything Fast is the best book I have found on this subject. He explains what he calls the Cybernetic Transposition technique. This is a technique to become very clear on your best intentions without any conflict. Once you remove your conflicting desires and roadblocks to success, you can focus on mantras and affirmations which are in line with your ideals, best intentions and happiness.

This is the best and fastest way to successfully use autosuggestion. Even if we know how to use autosuggestion in one way, we might do so in an unconscious way. We also manifest things which aren’t good for us, and which can bring about problems too. Our unconscious minds are wise and are listening to everything we say. If we offer counter-intentions to our largest desires, our unconscious mind will deliver only half of what we wanted, because of our unconscious fears around our desires. Our unconscious mind keeps us safe by delivering both our hopes and our fears!

By getting clear and focusing all parts of our mind on our intended outcome, we can achieve far more with autosuggestion than if we offer conflicting thoughts and intentions to our unconscious minds – which will then deliver results appropriately.
