As A Man Thinketh

As a man thinketh is a literary essay and book first published in 1903 by James Allen. It deals with the power and right application of thoughts. How we think is how we become. Every detail of a persons life is in some way related to the way he or she thinks about it. Whether the condition be considered  ‘good’ or ‘bad’ does not matter.

“By virtue of the thoughts which they choose and encourage; that mind is the master-weaver, both of the inner garment of character and the outer garment of circumstance, and that, as they may have hitherto woven in ignorance and pain they may now weave in enlightenment and happiness.” – James Allen

Thoughts and circumstances are intricately linked. For those who develop an understanding of this truth, nothing is beyond their reach. Looking into your thoughts and attitudes will bring the circumstances of your life into a clearer understanding of this. Someone who seeks joy, wealth and happiness can not attain them without the appropriate thoughts of their like. Choosing the right thoughts is therefore vital for success. The success oriented mind brings about success. Wheras the mind filled with thoughts of inadequacy, limitation and indecision will manifest circumstances which relate to those thoughts.

Napoleon Hill’s book Think and Grow Rich (access Think and Grow Rich PDF) which was published after As a Man Thinketh in 1937 draws similar parallels to James Allen’s book. Here in As a Man Thinketh James Allen talks about the mind as a garden:

“A man’s mind may be likened to a garden, which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild; but whether cultivated or neglected, it must, and will, bring forth. If no useful seeds are put into it, then an abundance of useless weed seeds will fall therein, and will continue to produce their kind. “

In Napoleon Hill’s book Think and Grow Rich on the chapter on Autosuggestion Hill writes:

“Recall what has been said about the subconscious mind resembling a fertile garden spot, in which weeds will grow in abundance, if the seeds of more desirable crops are not sown therein. AUTOSUGGESTION is the agency of control through which an individual may voluntarily feed his subconscious mind on thoughts of a creative nature, or, by neglect, permit thoughts of a destructive nature to find their way into this rich garden of the mind.”

As A Man Thinketh So Is He

It is not necessarily what “a man” wants that he attracts but rather what he is and is becoming. Holding thoughts of inadequacy and fear will bring about their material counterpart. Thoughts of confidence and purpose, when directed though a meaningful pursuit, will bring about circumstances of their like.

As A Man Thinketh Quotes

“Thought in the mind hath made us. What we are By thought we wrought and built. If a man’s mind Hath evil thoughts, pain comes on him as comes The wheel the ox behind . . . If one endure In purity of thought, joy follows him As his own shadow – sure.”

“A man does not come to the almshouse or the jail by the tyranny of fate or circumstance, but by the pathway of groveling thoughts and base desires. Nor does a pure-minded man fall suddenly into crime by stress of any mere external force; the criminal thought had long been secretly fostered in the heart, and the hour of opportunity revealed its gathered power.”

“Men do not attract that which they want, but that which they are. Their whims, fancies, and ambitions are thwarted at every step, but their inmost thoughts and desires are fed with their own food, be it foul or clean. The “divinity that shapes our ends” is in ourselves; it is our very Self. Man is manacled only by himself. Thought and action are the jailers of Fate – they imprison, being base; they are also the angels of Freedom – they liberate, being noble.”

“That cause may take the form of a conscious vice or an unconscious weakness; but whatever it is, it stubbornly retards the efforts of its possessor, and thus calls aloud for remedy.”

As A Man Thinks

As a man thinks he becomes. Great books like James Allen’s As a Man Thinketh, Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich, Earl Nightingale’s “The Strangest Secret” and of course Rhonda Bryne’s “The Secret” all profess and echo this great truth:

“We become what we think about”

Not only do we become what we consciously think about, but also we become what we hold in our minds which we are unaware of. Our hidden attitudes, agendas, fears and phobias all have a controlling influence on our behavior and our circumstances.
