Am I Having A Midlife Crisis Quiz?

A ‘midlife crisis’ is typically thought of as some kind of event or identity turn around from around the age 30-50 years old. It can be preceded by a lifetime of ‘fitting in’ to social norms and an unchanging social identity. Upon realizing your mortality, you can decide to make some drastic changes and this can be ignited by a lifetime event such as losing someone important, a career change or other life changing happening.

As we hit our 40’s there is a gradual acceptance of things as they are – the job, the family, the partner. But equally there is a growing sense of our own mortality and a need to be reborn and grasp life again instead of allowing entropy to take our lives in the slow downward trajectory of comfort, apathy,  laziness, old age and eventually death. It is around this time when 40 something year old’s grow a beard, get their ears pierced, chase younger trophy partners and buy convertible sports cars – and that’s just the women!

Our attitudes towards our career, family, partners and other life choices are often motivated by our social groups. If these groups change so do our attitudes towards these life issues. Perhaps you have several groups of friends in your life and as such no strong determining factor as to which direction to take in life. Or, you have always had a strong bias of your life’s choices and direction and are only now questioning it?

Events In Your Life

Have some recent events in your life made you question your choices and attitudes? A major shock can rejig attitudes which you have had for years. Or a growing dissatisfaction with life in general can ultimately bring about some major changes in a short period of time.

Your Personality

Do you like yourself? Are you a people pleaser? Do you always stand up for yourself? Perhaps you have always been a rule follower and the unexpressed feelings and emotions are needing to voice themselves. No-one is listening or taking you seriously. Perhaps you have have always done what you were ‘supposed to do’ in life and are feeling some resentment and want to rebel? If you have been holding onto some deeply repressed emotions for some time, midlife can often be a trigger to release them and change course.

Roles In Your Life

Do your current roles in life support your ideas about who you are and want to be? Perhaps your personality has led you down a path you wish to change or made you follow the rules more than you have wanted? How do you feel about the roles in your life? Are you the person you have always wanted to be?

Career Path

Are you feeling unsatisfied in your career or family life? Would you like a change but are afraid to take a chance? Does your current career support you in a way you like or do you feel held back? Are you fully expressing yourself in your career or are you afraid of speaking your mind? Do you have any real friends in your career or do they only depend on your work related activities? Having a career which is in line with your goals, attitudes, abilities and ideals feels great. Most people don’t have this and compromise in at least one area in order to have a stable home life and financial stability. Final Thoughts

Mahatma Ghandi said that “Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony.”

If your life feels like it’s heading for a crash, perhaps the reason is because you have been living into someone else’s ideals. We all do this to an extent in order to fit in with society, social groups and to get on with people and build relationships.

  • What do you really think when you give yourself permission to be honest with yourself?
  • How do you really feel about events in your life when you are alone and have no-one to impress?
  • What is the most important aspect of your life?
  • Who would you choose to spend most time with if you could?
  • What would you do differently if you could start again?
  • How would you choose to spend your time if money didn’t matter?
