Job insecurity and dissatisfaction are a couple of reasons why you might want to know how to build a career portfolio. But a career portfolio also gives you something else. Once you have multiple income streams from a portfolio of careers, you are no longer dependent on any one of them. Having a single career/job means you have to be very loyal to your income source. Is that loyalty reciprocated? Over time too you can become jaded and generally fed up of any given career path. Having multiple careers means you keep things interesting and keep learning new things.
How To Build A Career Portfolio
Follow Your Passion
Building a career portfolio doesn’t happen overnight. However you can start with what you are interested in. Many people put their income before their interests and deal with the fallout of that decision later. Later finding that they have no interest in their job, but are trapped by their income level and unable to change direction. Your ideal career choices will be determined by your values and ideals. Unless you have some passion in what you are doing, you are going to find difficulties up ahead. On the other hand some people spend years becoming an expert at something and never make money from it.
What Lifestyle Do You Want?
Some people want peace and quiet and others want to be busy dealing with people continuously. A busy executive job might be someone’s idea of heaven but another persons hell. Personal Purpose
What means something to you in life? What would you or do you fight for? How would you like to be remembered? What brings out your passion? Having a purpose in your career is the best way to know you are on the right track. Do you want to make a difference to people’s lives? Or, is lifestyle the primary purpose?
Flexible Career Paths
I wanted to be a stuntman in my 20’s after meeting a stunt performer while working as a lifeguard. I found out about what I had to do and went off to do the required training. Here’s my stunt website. Work was always sporadic and so I had to try many other jobs in order to keep the money coming in between work. I filled my time off by trying various online tactics to bring the money in. I eventually found a business model which works online. Check it out here. I also kept working on my passion for Wing Chun Kung Fu and now I run a school. See the website here. I also had many office jobs along the way but decided 9 to 5 wasn’t for me eventually.
Spin Offs From Your Career
Many entrepreneurs started with just one passion. They worked hard at their chosen career path for many years before it finally paid off financially. From it they then created spin off career paths – things they could do as well as their ‘normal’ day to day job. What spin off career can come out of your own unique experiences and talents? Think about what famous actors or presenters do as spin off careers – books, Fitness DVD’s, voice overs, commercials etc. What transferable skills do you have which could be used in another capacity or different line of work?
