Do You Need A Paridigm Shift?

A paridigm is ‘a typical example or pattern of something; a pattern or model.’  We all carry our pattern of behavior around with us and can get stuck in the grooves of our unconscious habits. Our beliefs about one thing or another can stop us moving forwards in a productive and  natural way. We get so accustomed to our habits and beliefs that it becomes very difficult to change.

If you are less that happy in your life it could be that you are coming up against old beliefs which are holding you in an old paridigm. Or an old habit of behavior which no longer serves you. Excuses are a good way of looking into your unconscious mind for the reasons which hold you from the life you deserve. Make a list of the things you would really like to have, do and be in your life. Write them down. Really go to town and start dreaming again. Often we forget to use the once creative imagination which we used to have as a child. Over the years we forget this amazing creative tool and get bogged down with the ‘nitty gritty’ of life’s circumstances. But we can make change and we can start by tuning in again to this creative tool.

Now look at your list of things you would really like. It may be a new car, a new house or a different lifestyle. What is stopping you from attaining this kind of life? Write down next to each one why you have not yet attained it. On each subject write an appropriate response as to why your life is not exactly like you have imagined it to be. These are your limiting beliefs. They are often just roadblocks to your future happiness and success.

For example:

I would like to live in the country: I can’t because I can’t afford it.

I would like a new car: There’s nothing wrong with my old car.

I want an amazing job: I’m not qualified to do anything else and I’ve been in my current business for too long.

These are your qualifiers. You tell yourself these things to let yourself off the hook from having to actually do anything about your current situation. They are also your paridigms, or limiting beliefs. Before you can achieve any thing, you must first believe that you can. Without this you won’t even attempt to make a positive change. Is your life exactly how you want it to be? If not then there is room for change. We are the painters and decorators of our own lives and can choose to make a change if we so desire. The trouble comes when we decide that we are powerless to affect change.

By becoming aware of your limiting beliefs or paridigms, you loosen their affect on you. You see them for what they are – limiting beliefs. The degree to which you have bought into an idea relates to how much it controls you. Have a look at some of your limiting beliefs by writing a list of things you want and then why you have not yet achieved it next to it. Those are your limiting beliefs.

To change limiting beliefs takes time. You first need to recognize them for what they are – lies! We can tell ourselves empowering lies or dis-empowering lies, our subconscious will simply deliver accordingly – providing we sincerely believe them. In Napoleon Hill’s book ‘Think and Grow Rich’ he talks about playing “a legitimate ‘trick’ on your subconscious mind – by making it believe, because you believe” in whatever you wish to create. In this same chapter on autosuggestion he states that ‘Through the dominating thoughts which one permits to remain in the conscious mind, (whether these thoughts be negative or positive is immaterial), the principle of autosuggestion voluntarily reaches the subconscious mind and influences it with these thoughts.

Our constant chatter is being listened to by our subconscious minds and our subconscious is attempting to create that which we are choosing to think about. However, when our limiting ideas about the world are a part of those thoughts, we also give that message to our unconscious, therefore limiting the results to our ideas. A good way to change these ‘old’ beliefs which you have once bought into is to write down an opposite belief. For example let’s say you have a limiting belief about money “Money is limited” and so you replace this old belief with “Money comes easily and frequently” or “the flow of money is unlimited”. If you have been telling yourself the old belief for many years it will have had an effect on your life. Changing old beliefs like this can take time but when you realize the grip that they (once) had on you you can release it easily and effortlessly! It’s as easy as you want it to be!
